Judges Devotional - June 24

When Strength Becomes a Weakness

Read: Judges 15

Key Verse: Judges 15:18 – “Because he was very thirsty, he cried out to the Lord, ‘You have given your servant this great victory. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?”

Devotional Thought:
Samson was a man of legendary strength. With the jawbone of a donkey, he struck down a thousand men. He was bold, fearless, and often impulsive. Yet, in the quiet aftermath of his greatest triumph, we find him at a breaking point—not from battle, but from thirst. This physical thirst mirrors a deeper spiritual truth: even the strongest among us are desperately dependent on God. Samson’s cry reveals the tension between confidence in himself and his ultimate need for the Lord. He acknowledges that the victory came from God, yet his complaint sounds entitled, as if God owed him more. It’s a sobering moment: strength without surrender leads to spiritual drought. We, too, can find ourselves relying on our talents, charisma, or past victories. But when we live as if we don't need God, our strength becomes our weakness. God's mercy meets us in our dry places—not to shame us, but to refresh and remind us of where our true help comes from.

Reflection Questions:
How does Samson’s arrogance contrast with his desperate need for God in this chapter?
In what ways can trusting in your own strength cause you to drift from God’s presence and purpose?
Where in your life do you need to shift from self-reliance to renewed dependence on God?

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that all my victories come from You. I confess that I have often relied on my own strength in the area of ____________________________. Today, I acknowledge my deep need for You. I cannot live on yesterday’s victories or assume I can make it on my own.
