Becoming SALT Devotional - July 10

Discipleship and the Cost of Being Salt

Read: Luke 14

Key Verse: Luke 14:34-35

Inductive Questions:
  • What does Jesus mean when He warns against losing saltiness? (Salt in Jesus’ time was valuable for preserving food and adding flavor. When salt lost its effectiveness—often due to contamination—it was useless. In the same way, disciples who no longer reflect Christ’s character or influence the world for God’s kingdom lose their impact. This warning is a call to spiritual vitality and faithful living. For example, if a believer compromises truth to blend in with culture or grows spiritually apathetic, they risk losing the distinctiveness that draws others to Christ. Jesus is saying: remain potent, stay faithful, and let your life continually reflect the transforming power of the Gospel.)
  • How does this passage relate to the cost of following Him? (Jesus is emphasizing that being His disciple involves a willingness to give up everything. Just as salt becomes useless when it loses its distinctiveness, a disciple who doesn't live set apart for God's purposes becomes ineffective. For example, someone who begins following Jesus but pulls back when it gets hard—whether due to persecution, pressure to conform, or reluctance to surrender personal comfort—illustrates the danger of not counting the cost. This passage challenges us to maintain spiritual potency and continue faithfully, even when sacrifice is required.)
  • How can you stay spiritually vibrant and effective for God's kingdom? (By prioritizing daily time in God's Word and prayer—like it truly matters. Spiritual vibrancy doesn’t happen by accident. It’s fueled by bold, believing prayer, consistent time in Scripture, and recording what God shows you in a journal. For example, starting your morning with Bible reading and ending your day with prayerful journaling keeps your heart sharp and tuned to God's voice.)

Prayer: Jesus, help me to remain faithful and never lose my passion for You. Keep me bold and useful in Your mission.

Reflection: Today, I will guard my saltiness by ___________. I humbly pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
