The Blessing of Obedience

Read: Psalm 119 (read as much of the chapter as time allows)

Key Verse: Psalm 119:1 – “Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord.”

Context & Explanation:
Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is a poetic celebration of God’s Word. Composed as an acrostic poem, it uses the Hebrew alphabet to organize its 176 verses. Each stanza focuses on the beauty, power, and guidance found in God's law, testimonies, and statutes. The psalmist expresses a deep love for Scripture and a sincere desire to walk in obedience. It teaches that God's Word brings blessing, purity, joy, and strength to those who follow it.

Inductive Questions:
  • What blessings come from walking in God's ways? (Examples: peace in the midst of trials, clarity in decision- making, strength to resist temptation, and joy that isn't tied to circumstances. Obedience positions us to experience God’s nearness and guidance.)
  • How does obedience lead to freedom and joy?
  • Where is God calling you to take a step of obedience today? (Examples: initiating reconciliation in a strained relationship, tithing or giving generously even when finances are tight, sharing your faith with a neighbor, or stepping into a new ministry role that stretches your comfort zone.)

Prayer: Lord, help me walk in the way of Your commands. Let my steps bring You joy.

Reflection: I will obey God today in the area of ___________. I humbly pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now observe the characters of the happy people. Those are happy, 1. Who make the will of God the rule of all their actions, and govern themselves, in their whole conversation, by that rule: They walk in the law of the Lord, Psa 119:1.
