A New Commandment

Read: John 13

Key Verse: John 13:34 – “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Context & Explanation:
John 13 records Jesus' final evening with His disciples before the crucifixion. In a powerful act of humility, He washes their feet and demonstrates servant leadership. As He prepares them for His departure, He gives a “new commandment”: to love one another as He has loved them—sacrificially, selflessly, and unconditionally. This kind of love is meant to distinguish His disciples from the world.

Inductive Questions:

• How does Jesus define the kind of love we should have for one another?
• What does it mean to love others as Jesus has loved us? (It means loving sacrificially, humbly, and unconditionally—just as Jesus did when He served His disciples, forgave their failures, and gave His life for them. It's choosing to put others first, even when it's costly or inconvenient.)
• In what areas do you struggle to love people as Jesus commands?

Prayer: Lord, teach me to love as You love. Remove selfishness and pride from my heart so that I can reflect Your love to those around me.
