Let’s read Proverbs chapter 15 using the H.E.A.R. method. As you read the passage, do the following:
H- highlight the verses that stand out to you.
E – explain the verse(s) in your own words of what God is saying to you.
A – apply the verse to your life. (What would it look like to live this truth in your
life?)
R – respond in prayer by writing your heart to God.
Each of these four steps cultivates a heart-attitude to hear God speak.
Let’s focus on V. 1 – “A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.” This is a Bible text we often experience for the good or bad. When anger arises, seek to understand the hurt under the anger. What is causing the anger? As you identify the hurt, express care with a ‘gentle answer.’
One time Liliana and I were in an ‘intensive moment of fellowship’ (i.e. – a fight), and I realized she felt disrespected causing her anger. I responded by how much I admire and care for her with a ‘gentle answer’ and the result was a turning away of anger.
Parenting IRL challenge: When your child is angry, find out the hurt underneath the anger. (Maybe it’s a disappointment with sports or school; seek to care for their hurt without giving lectures or answers).
