Let’s read Proverbs chapter 23 using the H.E.A.R. method:
H- highlight several verses that stand out to you.
E – explain the verse(s) in your own words of what God is saying to you.
A – apply the verse to your life.
R – respond in prayer by writing your heart to God.
Let’s seek to explain and apply Vs. 13 – 14 – “Don’t withhold discipline from a youth.. punish him with a rod, and you will rescue his life from Sheol.’ The ‘rod’ is not speaking of harsh treatment of a child, but proper discipline in love to form and shape the heart of a child. Be creative in ways to express discipline to your children; be aware that an undisciplined child is headed from trouble; Discipline is not an option for parenting.
Parenting IRL challenge: Look for opportunities for both ‘formative’ and ‘reformative’ discipline of your children in love. Formative discipline uses teachable moments in a child’s life to form them into the image of Jesus. Reformative discipline addresses attitudes and actions of rebellion with loving correction.
