Let’s begin our walk with Jesus in His FINAL WEEK of earthly ministry leading up to His death by reflecting on the Gospel of John, chapter 12, verses 1 – 11. Our reading is just 11 verses but so rich; read and reflect on the text several times.
A little bit about the background: The last days in the life of Jesus begin near sunset. His trip to Lazarus' house in Bethany began in Jericho, which is 17 miles away. In the early evening, after arriving in the home, he has supper. After supper, Mary (Lazarus' sister) anoints Jesus' feet with very expensive ointment. Judas (who carries the group's money bag) complains that what was spent on ointment could have been used to help the poor.
Questions for deeper reflection:
What was the significance of being in Lazarus’ house? (see John 11 )
What motivated Mary to demonstrate such ‘risky love’ for Jesus?
What motivates you to serve Jesus with ‘risky love?
– reflect on 2 Corinthians 5: 14 “For the love of Christ compels us”
Why did Judas criticize Mary’s worship of Jesus?
Respond to Jesus by writing a prayer to love him with extravagant love.
