As we walk with Jesus in His FINAL WEEK, we find ourselves in the upper room as He celebrates the Passover with his friends. Let’s reflect on John chapter 13, verses 1 – 17 using the H.E.A.R. method. As you read the passage, do the following:
H- highlight the verses that stand out to you.
E – explain the verse(s) in your own words of what God is saying to you.
A – apply the verse to your life. (What would it look like to live this truth in your
life?)
R – respond in prayer by writing your heart to God.
A bit of the background: The disciples are disputing over which of them will be the greatest, and Jesus has spoken that greatest is becoming the servant of all. Now he models this by washing the feet of the disciples.
Zoom into V. 23 - the apostle John identifies himself. – “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” His identity was not in his possessions, position, or titles but in his relationship of being loved Jesus.
How about you? What’s your identity? It’s true according to the story of the Bible – you are one loved by God! – see Romans 5: 8, 8: 33-36; Jeremiah 31: 3. Look at yourself in the mirror and celebrate that the image you see is loved by God.
Insight – Rejoicing often in your identity as one by God will empower you to love your near ones as Jesus has loved you.
