Let’s lead our hearts to know Jesus “in the fellowship of His sufferings” as we read and reflect on Matthew’s Gospel chapter 27, verses 45 – 56.
Let’s focus on Jesus’ words in V. 46 – “About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Elí, Elí, lemá sabachtháni?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?’, This is a cry of alienation, for all of our sin was being placed on Jesus; God the Father turned his face away from His Son. The first time that separation had occurred… ever from eternity they experienced unbroken fellowship.
Why did this alienation occur? Reflect on 2 Corinthians 5:21 – “God made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” This means that Jesus was forsaken, so that you may never be forsaken.
What does this do to your heart? Express your heart to the Lord in prayer.
