August 1st, 2024
Welcome to August as we will prayerfully read & study the book of N.T. book of James. GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS will be our sermon series theme. Let’s begin by reading the entire book of James (takes around 15 minutes). As you read, highlight verses that stand out to you, and prayerfully consider how they may apply to your life.
Let’s zoom into 1: 1 – “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ: To the twelve tribes dispersed abroad., Greetings.”
Notice how James introduces himself to his audience. James was the ½ brother of Jesus, who initially did not believe and was opposed to Jesus (See John 7: 5). Now he introduces himself as “a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.” He was even an early church leader (pastor) according to Acts 12: 17.
What changed James from unbelief to being an ‘all in’ servant/ follower of Jesus? Interesting that 1 Corinthians 15: 7 states that Jesus “was raised from the dead on the third day, and He appeared to the disciples.. over 500 at one time ‘then He appeared to James.’” The risen Lord Jesus Christ appeared to James; this was a moment of transformation in His life.
Pause and reflect: When did you first encounter Jesus? (recall & celebrate your salvation experience). What change can you celebrate Jesus has brought in your life? Write out a prayer expressing your heart of worship and thanksgiving for the transforming encounter with Jesus. Throughout the day, look for opportunities to share your story of hope with those who could benefit.
