Back to the Basics Devo Day 6 - August 6

GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS means simply reading to meditate on God’s Word; let’s prayerfully read James chapter 1, zooming into Vs. 19 – 21. What words or phrases speak to you as a highlight? How might you explain this to a friend? What application can be made to your relationships, emotional wellness, and pursuit of purity in all things?

  • When experiencing relational conflict, ask the Lord to help you live V.19 “Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.” Try ‘mirroring’ the words and expressions of one another. In other words, listen and repeat what has just been shared with you. – i.e. – “I think I understand you are saying ________________________________.” Respond with a heart of care for either a celebration or challenge expressed to you.

  • When struggling with impure thoughts and motives, prayerfully seek to put into practice V.21 – “rid yourself of impurity… by humbly receiving the Word…” Combat negative thoughts & feelings by increasing your intake of the Word. Commit Scripture to memory.

PRAYER PROMPT: “Abba Father, please cleanse me of impure motives and hurtful words; May Your Spirit empower the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart to be acceptable to you. Help me to speak words that would build up to ________________________ (name someone you have recently experienced conflict with). For I humbly receive your Word in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
