Let’s set our hearts on H.E.A.R. (ing) from the Lord as we prayerfully read the O.T. book of Isaiah, chapter 50.
Write your responses to your H.E.A.R. prompts and discuss with a near one or group. Look for opportunities ‘to do the book’ in your daily traffic patterns.
Let’s FOCUS on Vs. 4-5 and make this our prayer – “The Lord God give me
the tongue of the wise to know how to sustain the weary with a word.
You awaken me each morning; You awaken my ear TO LISTEN like a disciple.
Lord God, OPEN MY EAR, for I will not be rebellious; I will not turn back.” Amen!
Bonhoeffer writes, “We should listen with the ears of God that we may speak the Word of God.” While the fool “gives an answer before he hears” (Proverbs 18:13), the wise person tries to resist defensiveness, and to listen from a nonjudgmental stance, training himself not to formulate opinions or responses until the full update is on the table and the whole story has been heard.
Prayer prompt – “Lord Jesus, You described yourself as meek and lowly. Make me more like You and less like me. I confess my defensiveness and desire a greater capacity of humility and vulnerability to listen well to my neighbor. For I pray in Your name, Amen!”
- H. – highlight – i.e. Prayerfully take time to highlight or underline the words or phrases that stick out most to you.
- E. – explain - Thoughtfully write out in your own words what you understand and why it’s significant.
- A. – apply – i.e. – consider ways this passage connects to your life.
- R. – respond – i.e. – prayerful response with your heart to the Word for transformation.
