Let’s once again meditate & read aloud the words of Malachi 1: 11 - “My name will be great among the nations, from the rising of the sun to its setting. Incense and pure offerings will be presented in my name in every place because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord of Armies.
Today let’s prayerfully read & reflect on the Old Testament account of 1 Kings chapter 18 – i.e. - the ‘showdown’ between the Lord’s prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel (this is one of my favorite stops when touring Israel).
LET’S ZERO in on V. 24 – Elisha challenged the prophets of Baal, “Call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by setting fire to the wood is the true God!”
The prophets of Baal built altars to their god; what was the outcome? _____________________________________. This is what might called “irrelevant religion” that is lifeless and dead.
Elijah built an altar to the Lord; what was the outcome? ______________________.
This is what Jesus is referring to “worshipping the Father in Spirit and in truth.” Elijah was a man whom the Holy Spirit directed according to the truth of God’s revelation of Himself.
Pause to celebrate the same God who answers with fire is the One whom You worship today! Go ahead and ‘get happy’ in the Lord’s presence!
PRAYER PROMPT: Heavenly Father, as I reflect on this story of Elijah and how You answered with fire, I humbly recognize that Jesus is the One who baptizes me with the Spirit and fire (Luke 3:16); May my worship reflect the truth and Spirit that You are the true and living God who answers our prayers as your beloved children. As I reflect on how you recently answered my prayer for _____________________________, I worship You with a joyful and thankful heart, Amen!
